Last week we discussed some steps summer interns could take to ensure a successful summer. This week, here are a few ways you can help these young people succeed in your organization.
- State the obvious - You would be amazed how many people ruin there summer opportunities by making stupid mistakes that have more to do with judgment and less to do with their work product. Take time at the beginning of the summer to remind the interns of office perils such as inappropriate emails, unprofessional jokes and anti-social behavior. Telling a few stories about how previous interns ruined their chances in summers past usually gets the point across.
- Take the interns out to dinner - Lunch can be a rushed affair. People are more at ease after work and gives you the opportunity to get to know them in a more relaxed setting.
- Spread the word - If an intern is performing well, take the opportunity to let your colleagues know and don’t wait until the end of the summer to do so.

WebMD has published an article that discusses the pros and cons of exercising at certain times during the day. In the article, you will find discussion on circadian rhythms, body temperature and other hard to understand body facts. In order to decide when to workout, the article suggests the following:
Work out in the morning for a few weeks, then try noon, then early evening. Which do you enjoy most and which makes you feel best afterward? Also, consider the type of exercise, and other daily commitments.
In addition, we suggest the following:
- If you workout in a gym, go when it is less crowded.
- In our experience, working out at lunch sounds good on paper but is extremely hard to do on a consistent basis. If you have the type of job where no one will miss you for an hour in the middle of the day, go for it.
- Working out after work is a bit more feasible than lunch but still tough after a long day. This is the second best option.
- Let’s face it. The best time to workout is in the morning. You already knew that so get up and go get make it happen.
