Manly Advice for you Career

Monday is productivity/career day on invisibleblog.com.

by Jason Proe

Writer Marty Nemko could not find any useful advice when he searched for “career advice for men” so he wrote his own. Along with advice about choosing a career Marty also has some good advice on connecting with co-workers:

To get the support you need to get ahead at work you must build relationships with co-workers and higher-ups. Guys, that means you have to recognize the power of something that many women use all the time: deep connection.

Ask about things more central to a person than their new car or the local sports team. I’m not saying you have to “process deep feelings,” but both men and women care plenty about their careers, health, relationships and finances. Find out what the person is most concerned about and discuss that. Then share a concern of yours.

The easiest way to do this is ask the person a question about a subject you know they are interested in. For example: “Bob, by the way, I heard you have a sailboat. I am thinking about taking some sailing lessons. Do you have any advice as to what I should look for in an instructor?”

You can find the rest of Marty’s advice here on Kiplinger.com. If you have similar career advice please tell us about it in the comments!

Monday’s Grapevine

Links to news that matters to you.
  1. The San Francisco Chronicle wonders whether Barack Obama, who triumphed in the South during the primaries, will win any confederate states at all during the general election in the fall.
  2. Crucial in some areas are the votes and money of the small but influential group of Black Republicans. US News discusses the dilemma they face in deciding their attitudes towards the first African-American candidate of a major party.
  3. A similar choice looms for Black pastors, especially the more conservative among them. The Philadelphia Inquirer points out: “If they support Sen. Barack Obama based on his faith positions, they lose credibility and violate their biblical principles. On the other hand, if they embrace Sen. John McCain, they abandon the historic candidacy of Obama without really gaining moral high ground.”
  4. Swimming, not a sport with which African-Americans have traditionally been associated has seen some barriers break down recently. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution profiles Cullen Jones, an Olympic hopeful, and the only African American currently on the U.S. national swim team.
  5. The Los Angeles Daily News investigates the possibility that hospitals in the Los Angeles metropolitan area are implicitly discriminating against minority mothers by screening more of them for drug use. Continue reading

Friday’s Grapevine

Links to news that matters to you.

  1. An analyst in the Christian Science Monitor looks at polling results to try and discover where Obama’s race might be an issue in the general election - and discovers some startling facts. “By far, Obama’s race presents the biggest challenges to voters living in communities with relatively high African-American populations.”
  2. Coincidentally, the Los Angeles Times covers the tightrope the Obama campaign is walking in trying to energize and enfranchise African-American voters without alienating whites who live in the same areas.
  3. An article in the New York Times reviews the role that “ambivalence” about mixed marriages plays in the reaction to Obama’s candidacy in some parts of America.
  4. Ralph Nader has set off a firestorm by claiming that Barack Obama is no different from any other candidate - except that he is an African-American ‘trying to “talk white” and to appeal to “white guilt.”‘ The International Herald Tribune reports.
  5. Few sources care to address the actual nature of African-American Muslims and their place within Islam and America. Slate tries to answer some questions, including whether they are Sunni or Shi’ite. Continue reading

BETtrayal Awards Review

Friday is sports/entertainment day on invisibleblog.com

by Jason Proe

I am on a “low information diet” so I did not see the BET awards nor did I even know they were on. Instead, I think I spent that three hours of my life talking to my wife. Apparently, the only redeeming value the show had was that Al Green showed up. See the photo above. The guy in the shiny pants is Anthony Hamilton.

Since I did not see this “show” I am outsourcing my review. Please direct your attention to two wonderful posts. One post is from a brother who did not see the awards either and the second is from a brother that not only watched the awards but blogged live while watching. Both are good reads. I have included excerpts below and links to the full posts below. Have a great weekend.

Raw Dawg Buffalo on the BETrayal Awards:

…I became aware that this dumb shit was on when I made my blog rounds today. Seems a lot of mutha fucas think this shit, or such a spectacle is essential and even important. Although I couldn’t figure out its importance, I did not judge or relegate those that did as dumb fucks (I mean u complain about gas prices, but will look at the BET awards as opposed to writing a letter to your congressman about high gas prices). No just lost folks who prefer to live vicariously through the lives of those that don’t know hard work, but do know persistence.

AverageBro on the BETrayal Awards:

8:00 PM

[The show begins. Usher takes the stage.]

AB: Is that Marcus Houston?

AMB: This bama fell off. Usher got fat.

AOB: He got a gut.

AMB: Is that a bulletproof vest around his waist?

AOB: Bobby Brown gained some weight and blew his career too.

AB: Chris Brown better put down the baby back ribs.

AMB: Maybe the widescreen is distorted. Fix the setting.

AB: Maybe.

AOB: Doesn’t matter, he’s off.

AMB: Is he wearing a bulletproof vest?

AOB: Take the TV off widescreen, this distortion is distracting.

AMB: Doesn’t matter, Chris Brown has officially overtaken this dude. The crowd is silent.

AOB: He didn’t take his shirt off. He’s overweight.

[Camera strategically pans to Chris Brown in the audience.]

AMB: You can tell Chris knows he got Usher beat now. That was laaaaame.
